  • I just listening to your show and enjoyed it immensity. Looking forward to many more.
I had to smile when you mentioned the "Shoo Roo" device. There is (or was) a similar device available here in Canada to (allegedly) prevent collisions with deer. The idea was that the sounds produced by this whistle were beyond the range of human hearing, but would be heard by deer who would run away. Sounds logical enough, but I had a biologist friend tell me that whether or not the whistle really makes an ultrasonic sound is irrelevant, because while deer have exceptional hearing, the range of frequencies they can hear is virtually identical to what humans can hear. So if we can't hear it, neither can the deer. Oops! Then, year later, I heard a body shop mechanic on a radio program say that he has removed several deer whistles from cars he was working on that had had run-ins with deer. I'm not aware of any studies that actually tested deer whistles, but I wonder if they are the same device re-packaged as the Shoo Roo in Australia?

  • @sean. That is hilarious! It is un-Australian not to have seen and know the theme song to Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. You did the right thing.

  • I just listened to your segment on the skeptics zones on homeopaths and how they where trying to treat burn victims. If they where true homeopathic doctors and like cures like wouldn't a homeopathic preparations for burns be napalm? I mean napalm cause burns does it not.

  • You've got problems?
    They've got homeopathy...
    You've still got problems.

The use of homeopathic treatments is widespread in primary care. Most people believe it is herbal. At least herbal products may contain something.. Corrupted, cynical, time-wasting practitioners indulge in such quackery. Meanwhile, the clock ticks.. people get sicker.

  • On the skeptic zone, you all keep mentioning big cats in Australia. My apologies if you have heard of this article before, but I thought you might enjoy this article by zoologist Darren Naish:
    http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2007/03/australias_new_feral_mega_cats.php
Darren starts off with a bit about the conflict between his desire to deserve a reputaion as a good scientist, and his desire to write about weird and fascinating stuff. Then he takes a zoologist's eye to the evidence. He links to and discusses some video footage, and then discusses a the body of a dead Australian feral cat (Felis catus) which he reports as 870 mm long, with an additional 360 mm of tail.
