  • I find the format just fine. It has a gritty honest edge to it. I think polishing things up too much would take away from what it is - a podcast by everyday skeptical Australians. I connect with the guys on the Zone because they are not polished.

  • And we like to connect with our audience too! :) I think that's one of the great things about the Skeptics in the Pub and Think Tank eps - we're very keen on being a part of the community. But still, improving quality is a big part of our goals too! :)

  • Enjoyed the podcast. Its refreshing to see an ex-true believer (the ufo guy!) become a skeptic after reviewing the evidence.

It a pity all the other "true believers" cannot see though the smoke and mirrors.

My theory is that belief in all this pseudo science is like a new religion and it attracts the same deluded "fantasy prone personalities".

PS When I got home tonight there was an add for a magnetic bed sheet where 92% ... yes that's 92% of people believed that it helped their back ... must be true ... it was on TV ;-)

PPS I also donated $2 to the cause. Keep up the good work.

  • Enjoy your show a great deal, despite Stephan's commercial d.j delivery, which grates a little. A suggestion for discussions involving numerous participants. Perhaps a little more discipline from the participants. This episode, and some of the Drinking Skeptically items get a little untidy with gales of laughter and competitive dialoge. Nothing wrong with wit, but delivery and timing are crucial. One at a time, folks. Perhaps some tighter editing? Further, the participant using Skype had limited input, and was mostly ignored.
Please, don't get me wrong, I like the whole concept of a home grown skeptical podcast. Yours is very good, but with a little polish, could be so much better.

  • Hi Paul, thanks so much! Especially the donation, it's a real boost to know that people care about the show. I've seen magnetic pillows on page three of a UK paper, claiming they straighten out wrinkles on your face and even had the experience of wandering around a health shop with Rachael and Richard where we found it most difficult to contain the horror and/or keep a straight face! Hope you like Rachael's next report!

  • Hi Elspeth - first, thank you so much for your very detailed and considered critique!

As the 'person on the other end of the Skype', I agree that it was problematic - there was a bit of a time lag that would have made it difficult for me to be fully incorporated - it was also done over a dinner and more an informal chat than our usual 'news item focused Think Tanks'.

It's a pity about the 'gales of laughter' turning you off (I personally think Dr Rachael has the best laugh in skepticism!) but I do wonder if that's because we're still getting used to the format with a Skype participant? Since it was the second time we've done it with a Skyped-in member, I'm certain that future ones where it's the Sydney gang all together, they'll become more and more comfortable over time and tighten up on the 'delivery and timing'. After doing the show for only five months, we're working hard on finding our feet as quick as we can!

I'm personally not convinced that rehearsing ahead of time would echo the spontaneity and energy that the Sydney team naturally has, but I know we're always up for improvement. Richard does work hard on the editing and keeping people on track (I've heard outtakes!) and I do hope you continue listening to see if we can get to a 'polished' standard that will reflect the pride we have in the show.

I hope that you'll enjoy something that Stefan will add to the show in future - he's got a lot of talent that you're yet to hear - hope you stay around for that too!
